Weekend Sewing More Than 40 Projects and Ideas for Inspired Stitching
Weekend Sewing More Than 40 Projects and Ideas for Inspired Stitching
And because weekends are often the most fun when they’re social, Ross features ideas that encourage us to share our stitching and our time, such as a recipe for soup to simmer while sewing, then serve to guests later in the day, and tips for transporting a sewing machine to a friend’s house for an afternoon of social stitching.
The sewing instructions are beautifully illustrated, and patterns for the projects are included on pullout sheets.

4 Stars Gorgeous, great ideas, but…
I really like this book. It’s beautiful and has lots of fun ideas. I am pretty much a beginning seamstress, but my resolution for this year was to learn how to sew (and hopefully knit, though I haven’t yet started that adventure) well enough to be able to make most if not all my gifts for the holidays. I bought this because I hoped it would help me in that quest, and I think it will.
The problem is that the children’s clothes are really just for very young children. That’s great for the youngest in my family, but I’m not sure (being a beginner) exactly how to make them bigger — how much bigger to make them — to fit my older (aged 6 and 9, on the tall side) kids or my niece and nephews. But the other, not size-specific projects (like the fat-quarter napkins, the tablecloth, bags, etc.) look doable.
I do think the last chapter has some great tips on sewing. In fact, I wish this were the first sewing book I purchased because of the author’s explanation of various tools and techniques. For that, I think it’s definitely a worthwhile purchase.
4 Stars 1st printing woes don’t detract from a great book
Every sewing book will contain errors in the first printing. And with a book this size, containing so many projects, it’s inevitable that mistakes slipped through the process. Heather has posted an errata page to her blog:[...]. Do check it before you start a project, and I’m sure the mistakes will be corrected in future printings of the book. In the meantime, this is still a terrific book that has raised the bar on sewing books. It’s a visual feast, full of inspiration and wonderful starting points for a plethora of fantastic projects. I’m working on the summer blouse right now and can hardly wait to make some of the other projects as well.
1 Star It does take all weekend to sew one of Heather’s Patterns
First off, I would like to note that I have successfully sewn many outfits for myself using patterns, as well as create bags and quilts. However, this book has so many errors I do not know where to begin. The sewing patterns do not have strait seem lines, nor do they have marks to match things up. They are mere sketches. The directions lack most basic information, as well as details about which pieces go where. The yard sale skirt is way too small, which Heather even states on her blog that 7 panels would work better than the printed suggestion of 6. I spent about 3 hours attempting to get the waistband correct, and finally attached it using a different method as hers seems impossible. I did use 7 panels and extended the waist band a full 2″ on the large- x-large pattern, I am a size 10-12 and I can barley tie the skirt on. The fabric cutting diagram shows two skirt panels cut side by side on a folded piece of fabric (22″wide), yet the panels are about 21″ wide each. You could never cut it that way. The yardage requirement for the Everything Tote is printed wrong at 1/2 yard for the exterior and 1/2 yard for the lining, yet you would need at least 1 1/4 for each.
I am so very disappointed in this book, and frankly I am afraid to attempt another of Heather Ross’ projects and waist expensive beautiful fabric.
2 Stars The bloom is off the rose
This book is absolutely gorgeous! If you look through the reviews, that is what prompted many to purchase it. Heather Ross has a sharp eye for visual appeal. After purchasing this book I flipped through it for a week dreaming of projects. Come the weekend, I was inspired to get out my sewing machine and begin.
Once you start to actually USE this book - the patterns, directions, illustrations - the scales fall quickly from your eyes. Sometimes the seam allowance is indicated, sometimes not. Sometimes the directions say ‘wrong side’ and the illustrations say ‘right side’. If you look at Heather’s website, the errata is growing. Egregious miscalculations is yardage and sometimes ‘panels’ (check out everyone who has mentioned the yard sale skirt from the book’s cover!).
This book is beautiful, but the instructions are inaccurate and misleading. Presentation is important, but so is testing of projects and editing. If you are looking for a coffee table book, this one is lovely. If you would like to lose your self in a weekend of sewing, pass this one by.
Note the trend in the reviews - the five stars come primarily from people who haven’t actually tried to use the book yet - they’re still dreaming.
5 Stars Worth buying and nice to have
I bought this book after reading about it on a blog called “House on Hill Road.” It turned out to be a good book to have. The pictures are nice. The projects are doable and down to earth. The style of the book is country-life, simple summer days, easy going style. I think I will probably sew at least half of the items in the book, if not by pattern, then by figuring it out myself based on the instructions. It is very nice that the projects feature simple yet novel sewing techniques, where once you learn them, you can apply them to other sewing projects as well. I feel the book has good inspirational value as well, where I might get ideas from looking at the projects even if I don’t sew those exact items. I certainly plan to keep the book and refer to it again and again. That isn’t something I say about very many books.

5 Stars Loved it!!
I purchased this item for my 12 year old daughter for Christmas. She received other flashy and expensive gifts but this was one of her top favorite gifts!! It is a great outlet source for writing thoughts and feelings while reading others as well.
2 Stars Nothing
This book did absolutly nothing for me. Just a boring thing to write in, which I haven’t.
5 Stars This Chicken Soup Warmed my Soul
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: Journal, was one of the most moving books I have read. It is directed towards adolescents, and deals with issues every adolescent girl faces. It’s a blend of stories, quotes, poems, and spaces to write your thoughts. This book has many different sections such as: family, learning lessons, love and kindness, and tough stuff. My favorite section, however, is “loving yourself”. This book gave me a chance to deal with issues and see that I am not the only girl whom faces such issues. Chicken Soup is a book that I am able to pick up and at any time if I need some inspiration, help, or reassurance. Other issues helpful to me were on drinking, self-esteem, eating disorders, and how to deal with my past. Another good part about this book is that a lot of it is compiled with texts written by teenage authors. There are spaces for friends to write about you, and spaces for you to express how you feel on certain issues. Chicken Soup allowed me to realize I was not the only girl who had experienced some of the feelings I did. After reading this book I knew I wasn’t alone! I do highly recommend this book to any teenage girl. Adolescence is a hard time to get through, and many girls need inspiration. You do not have to read the book cover to cover; you can pick it up any time and read whatever section you desire.

5 Stars Good idea
It is great to have a place to write down all that you are feeling, and it gives you little clues so that you can write down things that you are not even necessarily thinking of at that moment in time.

5 Stars Easy to Navigate!
Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases by Grenville Kleiser is a book in the public domain and there are several versions available on Amazon as Kindle editions. I actually got samples of all of them before I made my choice. Some cost under a dollar, but the only way to find anything was to endlessly push “Next Page” on my Kindle until I arrived at the section I wanted. This edition cost a little more than the others, but it was the ONLY one that was formatted so I could navigate to the chapter I wanted and even to the first letter of the phrase - Thank you!
I have always been a prolific reader and a lover of the English language. I use to read dictionaries as a child - family and friends thought I was more than a little strange! If you love language like I do, if you recognize the beauty in a well-turned phrase, if you appreciate how precisely chosen words and phrases can evoke new ideas and new trains of thought, AND if you want an edition of Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases that is actually usable - Get This Book!

5 Stars Slept on
I’m an artist and a martial artist. I write songs. If you can’t get at least 100 good “ways to put something” out of this book, you’re probably writing Crunk music for knuckleheads.
Poetic, homiletic, powerful, comprehensive, so slept on.
5 Stars A wholly comendable book that will improve your writing and speaking immensely.
“Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases” by Greenville Kleiser contains a powerful and dynamic method that may be used to attain a larger repertoire of words. If applied correctly, this prodigious book will not only increase your inventory of words but will introduce you to an innumerable and serendipitous wealth of words such that your writing and speaking could become the envy of your readers and/or listeners.
5 Stars A Real Stunner
It may very well be the longest book title ever. “Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases: A Practical Handbook of Pertinent Expressions, Striking Similes, Literary, Commercial, Conversational, and Oratorical Terms, for the Embellishment of Speech and Literature, and the Improvement of the Vocabulary of Those Persons Who Read, Write, and Speak English.” But it’s a wonderful resource for writers. I downloaded the e-book version of this (Sorry, Amazon!) and then downloaded the file (in many parts) to my iPod, to use during essay writing at school. I use it at home when I write my own short stories. I use some of the phrases in my speech, and I can assuredly say, everyone needs a little pizazz in their speech. I would recommend downloading it for free (can’t beat free) but I would GLADLY pay $25 dollars for this book. It’s irreplaceable.
Mardi Gras Parade History in Amateur Film Footage DVD 1941
Mardi Gras Parade History in Amateur Film Footage DVD 1941

This extremely rare amateur footage of 1941s Mardi Gras shows a very different celebration than that of modern day. The footage includes the Krewe of Nor, a childrens krewe, and the Krewe of Venus, which are parade troupes that no longer exist (though the Krewe of Little Rascals currently performs). The elegantly decorated floats are hand-drawn, and usually have only a few people on board. There is no wanton flinging of cheap beads, as beads back then were made of glass and were given out more sparingly. Tantalizing footage of costumed revelers dressed as cowboys, pirates, and clowns dazzle on screen. All in all, this film provides a wonderful nostalgic view of a more elegant and civilized Mardi Gras.
